WiFi Smart Plugs, Controllers and Remotes: Which One Do You Need?

Short answer: if you already have a wall switch or light you want to add WiFi control to without rewiring the room, get the WiFi Smart Controller. If you want several smart sockets in one place, get the Power Extension. For one timed plug for a single appliance, get the Timing Switch Socket. To run an air conditioner, TV or set-top box by phone or voice, get the Smart IR Remote. They solve different problems and most use different companion apps, so check which one fits before you order.

Our WiFi Products range covers four different jobs, not four versions of the same gadget. This guide goes through what each one actually does, using only the specifications printed on the units and stated on their listings, so you can pick the right one instead of guessing from a product photo.

Already have a wall switch? Use the WiFi Smart Controller

The Swiss WiFi Smart Controller is not a plug: it is a compact box wired in line with an existing light or appliance circuit, with separate input and output terminals (L and N in, L and N out), so that circuit can then be switched from a phone app on iOS or Android, including timed switching. The ratings printed on the unit itself are a power supply of 90 to 250 V AC at 50/60 Hz, a maximum load of 300 W LED or 1500 W resistive, Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz on the 802.11 b/g/n standard, a working temperature of −20 to 70 °C, and wireless standby consumption of 0.5 W or less. Because it is wired into a circuit rather than plugged in, fitting one is electrical work: our own electricians install in Lahore (in Islamabad, the electricians of our partner AVS Group do), and installation by a qualified electrician is a condition of the warranty everywhere else.

Want several smart sockets in one place? Use the Power Extension

The WiFi Smart Power Extension is a plug-in power strip: 4 universal sockets and 3 USB charging ports on one lead, with no wiring required. Its listing states voice control compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant, remote control and timer or countdown scheduling through the Smart Life App over Wi-Fi, and built-in short-circuit, over-voltage and over-current protection. It suits a TV console, a desk or a kitchen counter where several devices need smart sockets at once, rather than one device on its own circuit.

Want one timed plug for a single appliance? Use the Timing Switch Socket

The Smart WiFi Timing Switch Power Socket plugs any appliance into a single smart, timed socket, controlled over Wi-Fi from a smartphone app. Its own listing does not name the app, so confirm the exact app with us before buying if that matters to you. From the product photo, the socket face is a round, two-pin design with earth clips, printed 250 V 16 A, in the style generally called Schuko — whether this particular plug fits your Pakistani wall socket is worth confirming with us on WhatsApp first, since plug shapes vary by appliance and we have not verified this against a specific wall outlet.

Want to control the AC, TV or set-top box? Use the Smart IR Remote

The Smart IR (Universal Remote Control) is a small hub that replaces separate infrared remotes. Its listing states it runs air conditioners, TVs, set-top boxes and fans from a phone, plus a DIY mode for other IR-controlled devices, operated through a companion smart-home app (again, not named on the listing) whenever the unit is online. It supports voice control with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, schedules and scenes shared with other devices in the same app, notifications, and shared access for other family members. None of the three other WiFi products in this guide do this job: they switch power, this one replaces a remote control.

Why 2.4 GHz, and why not one app for everything

The Smart Controller states its Wi-Fi band as 2.4 GHz, and this is normal for smart home accessories generally, not a limitation specific to our range. Published technology sources explain that 2.4 GHz chips are cheaper to build into small devices, and that the 2.4 GHz band reaches further and passes through walls more easily than 5 GHz, which matters more for a plug or controller than the small amount of data it actually sends. Your router’s 2.4 GHz network, not the 5 GHz one, is what these devices need to see.

These four products also don’t share one companion app. The Power Extension names the Smart Life App on its own listing; the Timing Switch Socket, Smart Controller and Smart IR Remote each mention only “a phone app” or “a companion app” without naming it. If you want to run several of these from a single app, ask us which apps they currently pair with before you buy more than one — we would rather tell you upfront than have you find out after installation.

Warranty on WiFi accessories

Our warranty policy covers “Wi-Fi accessories, sockets, LED lights and similar items” for 6 months from the date of invoice, shorter than the 12 months on smart switches, control panels and door locks. For the Smart Controller specifically, installation by a qualified electrician is a condition of the warranty, since it is wired into mains-voltage circuitry rather than plugged in.

Before you order

Frequently asked questions

Do any of these need rewiring or an electrician?

Only the WiFi Smart Controller: it is wired in line with a circuit with its own input and output terminals, so fitting one is electrical work, and our own electricians install in Lahore (in Islamabad, the electricians of our partner AVS Group do). The Power Extension, Timing Switch Socket and Smart IR Remote simply plug in.

Do these WiFi products all use the same app?

No. The Power Extension’s listing names the Smart Life App. The Timing Switch Socket, Smart Controller and Smart IR Remote each mention only an unnamed phone or companion app. Ask us which app a specific product currently pairs with before buying more than one.

Will these work with Alexa or Google Home?

The Power Extension and the Smart IR Remote both state compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant on their listings. Voice-assistant support for the Smart Controller and the Timing Switch Socket is not stated, so ask us to confirm before you buy.

What is the warranty on WiFi accessories?

Our warranty policy covers WiFi accessories, sockets, LED lights and similar items for 6 months from the date of invoice, shorter than the 12 months on smart switches, control panels and door locks.

Which product controls my air conditioner or TV?

The Smart IR (Universal Remote Control). Its listing states support for air conditioners, TVs, set-top boxes and fans, plus a DIY mode for other infrared-controlled devices, operated from a phone or by voice.
